Powers and Abilities
Tekla can cast lifelike illusions that can confuse and disorient her foes. In most operations, her illusions are fairly subtle- such as changing the color of stoplights, modifying the text of documents, etc. She is immune to these illusions herself and has been able to see past the illusions of her like-minded opponents. In contrast, Tekla will overwhelm serious opponents with a horrific fantasy landscape where their allies are interposed with their greatest foes. If possible, Tekla will use her hypnotic abilities to ensure that the battle takes place. Shock Treatment’s research into subjects will generally uncover her target’s fears and hatred- which Tekla uses to her best advantage. She will generally conceal her own location so that she can strike at them unobserved with her formidable weapons skills.
Tekla also has limited telepathic abilities that she uses to communicate with her teammates and share battle plans when in the midst of combat. Opponents are often surprised with the Doom Patrol’s ability to coordinate attacks in the midst of a firefight. Tekla is the reason. Tekla has avoided the use of hypnotism in non-combat because of its moral implications, a situation, which causes quite a bit of consternation among the team.
Opponents should not fail to remember that above all, Tekla is a soldier. When all else fails, she can turn to her military training. Tekla remains proud of her skills in demolition.
Tekla had a happy childhood, raised in the bosom of Jerusalem by her military father. His death inspired her to enter the military as well where she was tapped at an early age into military intelligence. When word of a criminal organization known as Quorum crossed her desk, she volunteered to investigate by infiltrating the international cartel. Her success was the Quorum’s greatest failure in security, but it did not last long. Tekla was identified, captured, and subjected to a series of medical experiments by their resident genius James Bundren. A combination of psychedelic drugs left her with her current powers.
Shock Treatment became aware of her new abilities through his connection with Bundren and approached her with his plan to dismantle Quorum from the inside- skipping the part about his assuming the power for himself. Taken with his overwhelming personality and solid planning, Tekla agreed. Over the next month, Shock Treatment arranged a series of events that led the Israeli government to believe that Tekla’s loyalties were always with Quorum. The Quorum High Council was also persuaded of Tekla change of heart.
What there is of a moral conscience within the Doom Patrol comes from Tekla. Constantly being called upon to compromise her personal beliefs has slowly taken its toll, but the Doom Patrol is the only place for her. She remains a wanted woman by the Israeli government and a word from Shock Treatment would initiate a death sanction from the Quorum.
Tekla is world weary, but sees the destruction of Quorum as her personal responsibility. Shock Treatment and his Doom Patrol have the best chance of destroying this cartel. What happens after that is a concern for the future. Her time with the Israeli military had already trained her that sometimes the best objectives must be achieved through the basest of means. She is a realist and does what she thinks is necessary.
Use in Adventures
Tekla remains a wanted fugitive and is seldom seen outside the Doom Patrol headquarters unless the team is on a mission. It is possible that a siting of her would warrant an investigation leading to the public knowledge of her current activities. It is possible that she might act alone if she discovered a situation that threatened Israel.
- There is an attraction between Tekla and Dr. Franklin Halstrom. Thus far neither has pursued it. Both of them have a lot of baggage.
- Tekla holds onto the shattered remains of her moral code and prevents the team from entering into murder (without a purpose) and activities that would hurt the world at large. While most of the team trusts her, Shock Treatment has her under close observation.
- The reason for Tekla’s life of crime is her estrangement from her homeland. If they were to take her back, she very well might find a way to escape Shock Treatment’s influence. Upon learning of a serious threat to Israel, Tekla will petition to return there and end it—for the good of Quorum’s position there of course.
